The Ethiopian at the Door: Fantasy, Literality, and Race in ‘Cantigas de Santa Maria’

Pamela Patton (Princeton University) will give a Zoom lecture on race in the Cantigas de Santa María as part of Montclair State University’s Medieval and Early Modern Seminar Series.

Dr. Patton is the director of The Index of Medieval Art at Princeton University. An art historian of medieval Spain and its environs, Dr. Patton’s particular research interests focus on the role of the image in articulating cultural identity and social dynamics among the multiethnic communities of the Iberian Peninsula.

Among Dr. Patton’s many publications are two monographs, Pictorial Narrative in the Romanesque Cloister (2004) and Art of Estrangement: Redefining Jews in Reconquest Spain (2012).
