ASPHS Prizes
The Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies is accepting submissions for the inaugural Kagan Prize and the Best Early Career Article Prize.
The ASPHS is accepting submissions for two of its regular prizes: the new Kagan Prize, and the Best Early Career Article Prize.
Both prize winners will be announced at the Business Meeting at the 53rd annual conference in Lisbon in July 2024 (though the winner is not required to attend the conference.) Each prize includes a $250 award.
The Richard L. Kagan Prize
The Richard L. Kagan Prize, established in 2023, recognizes the best article or chapter on the history of the early modern Spanish world, c. 1500-c. 1800. The prize honors the contributions to this field by Richard Kagan, Academy Professor and Arthur O. Lovejoy Professor Emeritus of History at Johns Hopkins University.
Eligibility
To be eligible, submissions must be articles or book chapters in a peer-reviewed publication with a focus on the history of the early modern Spanish world, c. 1500–c. 1800, published between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023 in any of the three languages of the society (English, Portuguese, and Spanish.) Authors must be active members of the ASPHS at the time of submission.

The 2024 ASPHS Early Career Article Prize
The 2024 ASPHS Early Career Article Prize recognizes the best article or book chapter in a peer-reviewed publication authored by a graduate student or Ph.D. who has received the degree in the past five years.
Eligibility
To be eligible, submissions must be articles or book chapters in a peer-reviewed publication, have a focus on Iberian history, be published between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023, and be in any of the three languages of the society (English, Portuguese, and Spanish.) Authors must be active members of the ASPHS at the time of submission.
